Prof Marvin Reid, the 1983 Grace Kennedy Foundation Scholar, is a graduate of the University of the West Indies (UWI) where he was awarded the MBBS (1988) with honours and subject prize medals in physiology and pathology and a PhD (1999). Prof. Reid subsequently completed training in Nutrition with Childrens’ Nutrition Research Centre (CNRC), Baylor College of Medicine, Houston Texas, University of Southampton, UK, and Abbott Total Nutrition Programme.
He served as Director, Sickle Cell Unit from 2004 until March 2013, Director of Tropical Metabolism Unit 2013 to 2020, and since August 2006, Associate Lecturer in Department of Community Medicine & Psychiatry. He is now the Acting Deputy Principal, UWI Mona Campus and Deputy Dean, Research, Faculty of Medical Sciences. He teaches clinical nutrition, research methods, Family Medicine at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and has supervised several doctoral students to completion.
His research spans public health, metabolism, and clinical trials. He has co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed articles (ORCID https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4005-9384), several book chapters and has received the Mona Campus Principal’s and The UWI Vice Chancellor’s Award for Research Excellence as well as other international awards for research publications. Professor Reid is a Family Doctor and the former president (2018-2021) of the North American Region as well as Fellow and Board member of the World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/Family Physicians (WONCA). He is also a member of several national, regional and international professional bodies such as Medical Association of Jamaica, Caribbean College of Family Physicians, American Physiological Society, and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. He Co-chairs the Essential National Research Committee of the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Jamaica, which oversees the health research agenda of Jamaica and is a member of the Research Advisory Committee of Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA). In addition, he practices as a Family Physician in private practice and provides consultative service in clinical nutrition for hospitalized patients.
