Dr. Jhordanne Jones has been named one of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate and Global Change Fellows. The Fellowship Programme focuses on observing, understanding, modeling, and predicting climate variability and change on seasonal and longer time scales. The Programme aims to help create and train future leading researchers needed for climate studies.  Dr. Jones completed a B.Sc. degree with a major in Physics and minor in Mathematics with First Class Honours at The UWI Mona in 2012. She continued at The UWI Mona, completing an MPhil in Physics in 2016. Her thesis was entitled: Investigating The Use Of Statistical Models For Projecting Future North Atlantic Tropical Cyclone Frequency. Dr. Jones further pursued and completed her PhD at Colorado State University in 2021 as a Fulbright Scholar. Her research focused on examining patterns in the regional environment and the use of these patterns to improve seasonal forecasts of tropical cyclones.

As a NOAA Climate and Global Change Fellow, Dr. Jones will examine The Subseasonal to Seasonal Predictability of Tropical Cyclone Activity in a Warming Climate at Purdue University under the guidance of Dr. Daniel R. Chavas. Her research will examine the impact of climate change on hurricane variability on weekly to monthly timescales. This is essential for forecasting and mitigating against disasters in the near term. The Department of Physics and the Faculty of Science and Technology congratulate Jhordanne on her latest accomplishment.
