Membership

All registered undergraduate and graduate students, MONATS, academic, research and senior administrative staff of the University of the West Indies are members of the University Library, (the Main, Medical and Science Libraries) and have access to its services.

Persons enrolled in other tertiary institutions such as the Edna Manley College for the Visual and the Performing Arts and MICO, who are pursuing joint UWI courses and students from the Schools of Physiotherapy and Radiography are registered as undergraduates.

Visiting research workers, members of other universities, members of the University of the West Indies Guild of Graduates and other individuals may register at the discretion of the Campus Librarian and upon payment of the necessary fees if applicable.

* Loans from the Reserve Book Collection are limited to 3 items (including a maximum of 2 overnight items).
Staff represented by MONATS (formerly MONASA) may borrow two books each from the circulating collection, excluding the Reserve Book Collection,under the appropriate loan period in force from time to time.

Pamphlets may only be borrowed for 7 days.

Periodicals are available on loan only to graduate students, academic and research staff

Current periodical issues cannot be borrowed until they have been in the Library for one month or have been superseded by a later issue.

The following are not available for loan outside of the Library:

  • Reference books
  • Newspapers
  • Theses
  • Materials from the West Indian and Special collections
  • Materials from Government serials/UN collections
  • World Bank's Caribbean Public Information Centre

Renewals

Open Shelf Items can be renewed for a further loan period provided these have not been requested by another reader.

Fines

RBC overnight $50.00 per day
RBC 3-hour $20.00 per hour
Openshelf $10.00 per day

 

Maximum fines for very late return of Library material shall be at the discretion of the Librarian.

Borrowing rights may be suspended when total fines due exceeds $100.00

The Librarian is authorized to request the Bursar to charge the amount of unpaid fines to the readers personal account with the University. Penalties may include withholding of examination cards and deferral of the award of qualifications until fines have been paid

Lost and Found

As a courtesy to our patrons, personal items found in the library are held for pick up at the Circulation desks in the Main, Science and Medical Libraries.

Security

Users are required to carry their University Identity Cards at all times and entrance to the Library will necessitate the presenting of Id cards to the security present.

Removal of any material from the Library must be properly authorised. All readers leaving the Library must show at the exit point all books, periodicals in their possession and may be required to open for inspection any receptacle carried out of the Library. Unauthorised removal of material shall constitute a serious offence.

No bags, brief cases, parcels, (including five star folders) may be brought inside the Library. These may be left with the attendant at the entrance of the Library, but the University accepts no responsibility for the loss or damage to any article left and users are reminded not to leave valuable items in items left.

Behaviour in the Library

  • Smoking is not permitted in the Library
  • Food or drink may not be brought into the Library or consumed there
  • Use of cellular phones in the Library is not permitted
  • And remember ... be quiet, please!
