What are the steps to applying for entry to the Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB) Programme

Matriculation Requirements for the Undergraduate Programme (Bachelor of Laws)

For the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme, prospective candidates must possess a minimum:

Five (5) CSEC/GCE O-Level/BGCSE subjects, which must include English Language (Grades I-III or Grades A-C) or an Associate Degree with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 and above.

AND

A minimum of two (2) Double-Unit CAPE subjects or two (2) GCE A-Level subjects

OR

First Degree with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 and above or a Master’s Degree from an approved university.

Other acceptable non-regional qualifications include:

• International Baccalaureate (IB)
• SAT/Advanced Placement
• ACT
• Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)

Students transferring into the Faculty after their first year in another undergraduate programme, are required to have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 to be considered for admission.

Requirements for the Direct Entry Programme

Students requesting admission to the Direct Entry programme must possess a First Degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Please note there are no special subject requirements in addition to those necessary for matriculation.

The competition for places in the Faculty is such that very high 'A' level grades or very high averages in associate or undergraduate degrees are required for an applicant to stand a reasonable chance of gaining admission.

1. Complete and submit your online application form.
2. Ensure you complete all areas of the online form that feature a red asterisk.
3. Ensure you submit a valid email address on the form. It is the means by which The UWI will communicate with you.
4. Scan and upload all relevant certified documents to the application:
   • Birth certificate, Academic certificates (e.g. CXC, CSEC, CAPE), Professional certificates and/or Diplomas.
   • Marriage certificate/Deed Poll (whichever is applicable) if present name is different from that on documents.
   • Applicants currently attending an educational institution should have copies of the relevant documents certified by the educational institution before scanning and uploading.
   • All other applicants should have documents certified by a notary public before scanning and uploading.
   • The University reserves the right to ask applicants to submit original documents for verification by or before registration.
5. If additional documents are required you will be notified by the Admissions Section.
6. If you have done post-secondary academic work, you should request a transcript from your college/university to be sent directly to the Admissions Section, The University of the West Indies, Mona, Kingston 7, Jamaica.
7. High school students do not need to send transcript.

English Language Requirements for entry:

In the past, if you had not possessed the equivalent of the grades below, you would have been required to register for the ELPT. This is no longer required.

• Grade I in CXC/CSEC English A
• Grade A in GCE ‘O’ Level English Language
• Grade I or II in CAPE Communication Studies
• Grade A in GCE General Paper

Applicants who are successful in their application and receive an offer, are now required to register for FOUND1019 Critical Reading and Writing in the Disciplines in their first year of the programme. 

Persons who have English as a second language are still required to take the TOEFL test.
