Faculty of Law
The Faculty of Law, Western Jamaican Campus (The UWI, WJC), is now offering a certificate course entitled “Tourism and the Law”. The first seminar of its kind was conducted on December 7th 2019 and accommodated 25 hotel managers in person. The second course was offered online from June 2 and will continue to June 30th, 2020. This online course is provided to 62 hotel managers and human resource personnel who have registered for the course from all across Jamaica. The online course is funded by the Jamaica Centre for Tourism Innovation (JCTI) and endorsed by the Ministry of Tourism.
The Certificate in Tourism and the Law is designed to equip persons working in the tourism industry with a better understanding of the relevant legal issues impacting the industry. This is intended to result in a higher quality of delivery of service and a mitigation of exposure to legal risk.
The course is designed primarily for hotel managers, human resource personnel, administrative, sales and procurement staff and other such occupations within all aspects of the tourism industry. The course consists of an overview of the following topics:
The topics are covered in June 2020 for 6 hours per week, 2 hours per day for 3 days per week for a total of 30 hours. The course includes contributions from several lawyers from both the private and public bar, and from The University of the West Indies.
At the end of the course, students are granted a Certificate in “Tourism and the Law” from the Faculty of Law.
The course is delivered on the UWI MonaLaw Zoom platform and marketed through the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA).
