This is a major project to establish a UWI Western Jamaica branch campus at Irwin on the outskirts of Montego Bay, which would be the main point of expanded access for Mona. The intention is to start with a first intake in August, 2008, offering programmes in Management, Hospitality and Information Technology, expanding over the ensuing four years to a projected registration of over 1500 students, in some 9 programmes, including Nursing, Liberal Arts and Business Studies.
The initiative recognizes the demand for university education in that part of the island, as well as in certain specializations not currently offered at Mona, and intends to attract students not only from Jamaica but the other fourteen contributing countries of UWI.
It could have a significant impact on the development of the socio-economic capabilities of Western Jamaica as we extend the quality UWI brand to the area. A Project Manager, Maurice Tomlinson, has been appointed to coordinate day-to-day arrangements for implementing this initiative.
