Management Studies is the largest department in the Faculty of Social Sciences. It was established in 1971 and seeks to offer programmes of academic excellence to prepare students to meet the attendant challenges of the 21st century.
The department aims to assist in the regional and economic development of the Caribbean through on- and off-campus instruction, applied research, and technical assistance to business, industry, government, and schools. The department seeks to develop managers who will be able to confront successfully the challenges facing firms and governments within the Caribbean region as they seek to respond to the imperatives of an increasingly global environment. It seeks to do so through a process of generating information that will be of assistance to such managers through the research of faculty members, and disseminating information to students through its teaching activities.
The Department stresses the importance of the individual and is committed to both Undergraduate and Post-Graduate education. This catalog seeks to introduce students to the variety of programmes available within the department; programmes which ensure that each person is able to pursue a chosen path that will best develop his/her abilities.
In executing its mandate, the Department provides training to various levels of analysts and managers - from entry level to senior executive positions. This is achieved by offering a mix of programmes, each of which is designed to provide training for individuals operating at different levels of the organizational hierarchy.
The department offers bachelors degrees in Management Studies and Accounting. In addition it offers four masters degree programmes. It offers an M.Sc. in Accounting which has been delivered continuously since 1975. In 1993 the Department began an M.Sc. in Computer Based Management Information Systems with the then Department of Computer Science.
