Job Opportunities

The Centre for Marine Sciences conducts and facilitates research in the marine environment of Jamaica and the wider Caribbean, exploring the presence and status of coastal and marine species and resources while providing sound environmental advice to Governments and Non-Governmental Organizations. In an attempt to get islandwide coverage of marine and coastal issues, the Centre conducts research at new locations but also continues monitoring at known sites using a balance of pure and applied research.

UWI/DBML Internship
Deadlines for Application:
November 1 (January/winter cycle) and April 1 (June/summer cycle)
Length:
Six (6) months [June 11 - December 14 ; January 14 - July 14]

Requests can be made to alter the duration of the internship, and should be indicated clearly on the Internship Application Form.

The Role of the Intern
DBML's Interns take part in ongoing operational and research duties, including:

  • Assisting with research activities on marine, coastal and benthic assessments, coral nursery maintenance and lionfish control and management
  • Assisting with community outreach activities geared towards the conservation of the marine and coastal resources
  • Assisting with grant proposals
  • Assisting with literature searches, preparing presentations, etc.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Deep commitment to promoting marine conservation and sustainability
  • Commitment to learning about marine environmental research
  • Formal training in biology, ecology, marine science, natural resource management, or environmental science
  • Certified to at least PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or equivalent (or ability to undertake PADI Advanced Open Water Certification upon arrival)
  • Flexible schedule and ability to work independently
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, Internet and Email
  • Experience working with computers for internet searches and social media
  • Command of the English Language, both written and spoken form
  • Ability to work long hours in the field, usually starting very early
  • Ability to lift and/carry at least 50lbs

This internship will strengthen the following skills

  • Scientific planning design and fieldwork skills
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Communication skills, including cross-cultural communication
  • Presentation and facilitation skills

Financial Support
It is expected that the Interns will be responsible for their own travel and living expenses (food, air and ground transportation etc.) The DBML will provide on-site shared dormitory-style accommodation with cooking facilities. Employment (especially for overseas-based interns) during the Internship would not be possible. International interns are responsible for their own visa processing and associated costs.
